5 Stories of Building Resilience

A Canadian Olympian, a psychotherapist, a hip hop dancer, a pastor and two global development workers walk into adversity.  And no, this isn't a set-up line for a joke. These are real people in real adversity and what you can learn from how they developed resilience to be their best.

Melissa Lotholtz is a member of the Canadian Winter Olympics Team. Her sport , bobsleigh, is one of the original 5 events in the Winter Olympics. As a rookie in Bobsleigh in 2014, Melissa stood on three World Cup podiums. She made her Olympic debut in 2018 placing 7th in the world. How she builds resilience into her spirit. 

Kevin and Julia Garratt invested over three decades in China providing compassionate care for orphans, teaching ESL and living the Good news in community. In August 2014. Kevin and Julia were kidnapped by Chinese security forces and secreted away to a Chinese prison. That would be the start of 775 days in captivity. They share insights on building resilience in isolation.

Rev. Patti Pierce-Miller is the lead pastor at the historic Evangel Pentecostal Church in downtown Montreal. She serves on the General Executive of the PAOC. Patti is a pastor to pastors, having been in the trenches and lives resilience. Her voice is the calm in chaos. And if you don't follow her on Twitter you'll want to start now.

Dr. Paul Day coaches pastors and congregations as well as business leaders and their staff to become a healthier version of themselves through his work as a psychotherapist and leadership consultant. His work with leadership groups has been focused on leading through crisis and transition. Paul worked as a pastor at four churches, including Westside Kings Church in Calgary.

Connie Jakab is the only minister who can bust a move in a grocery store aisle and look great doing it. Connie leads from her feet and her heart. She founded National Hope Talks, a movement to create hope around mental wellness. In 2020 she started her own business and created the Brave tribe, supporting entrepreneurs in achieving their dreams. She is the passion behind Let's Talk Hope, a national conversation on January 28th to reduce the stigma and raise awareness around mental health. Personal insights on resilient parenting.
